    The Senior Safety Net Story

It's safe to say that the seed for what eventually would become Senior Safety Net was planted during a chance encounter between the two men who would later become the firm's co-founders. That Memorial Day three or four years back, Rob Burns and Mike Schmoyer both decided to participate at a charity motorcycle ride sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars USA (VFW). That, too, would set a pattern that continues to this day, with civic and philanthropic activities playing no small role in the company.

Raised by Depression-era parents with commonsense wisdom and a profound appreciation of the value of a dollar, Rob always liked the idea of helping seniors with their finances and initially put that desire to work as part of what he now calls “that other financial industry”—that is, the one that gets all the free publicity and has sunk so many retirements. He was the in-house financial services specialist for a local bank and also managed accounts for a “household name” brokerage. Robert did well enough on behalf of his clients during the boom years — that's always the easy part — but was never comfortable with the self-serving business model or with keeping his clients' assets at risk.

His worst fears became a reality in 2008, as the bottom fell out of the securities markets for the second time that decade. During an especially tense and discouraging account review with an older couple in the wake of the crash, Robert had his “aha moment”: He vowed never again to be involved with financial products that might force him to apologize for failing to protect a client's irreplaceable assets and for earning fees while doing it.

Rob resolved to chart his own course, seeking new and better options for retirees. This awakening and path of financial discovery ultimately led him to the unique, “upside-only” investing regimen that today defines the firm he and Mike Schmoyer co-founded, Senior Safety Net. He takes pride in introducing good, hard-working Americans to products that can help protect their retirement savings while also appreciating and/or generating the income they need to not just survive, but to thrive.

Today, Senior Safety Net clients enjoy knowing:

The response has been nothing short of spectacular, making Senior Safety Net one of fastest-growing firms in one of the nation's hottest financial niches, retirement-income planning. To service the demand, SSN during just the past year has opened three regional satellite offices in addition to its thriving headquarters in Center Valley.
